San Gimignano

View from the Torre Grossa

Return to the middle ages  and immagine yourself with the knights. Stop for a day at San Gimignano, a lovely town in the heart of the Chianti.

How to reach San Gimignano?

You can easily reach it by car or by train.

By car: from Florence take the freeway called Firenze-Siena, get off at Poggibonsi Nord and from there follow indications to San Giminiano. No worries about  parking as there is plenty just outside town. Once you parked the car, you will have to walk about 10/15 minutes (depending on where you find parking) but the walk is worth it because you will see the beautiful green hills and the town from below so get the feeling of what it will look like.

By train: the train station you will need to reach is Poggibonsi and from there you will easily find a bus that goes to the town.

I suggest you try to avoid Saturday morning because there is the local market in one of the main squares and it ruins it a bit.  But if Saturday is your only option, you will find plenty other things to see.

What to see in San Gimignano?

The skyline of this town is almost unchanged since the middle ages, including 13 towers built by noble families during the 12th and 13th centuries. It’s quite small and the Info points are very efficient.

The principal places to see are:

– Piazza del Duomo

– San’Agostino

– Collegiata (where you will find the Annunciation by Ghirlandaio)

– Palazzo del Popolo

Climb the Torre Grossa (Euro 6): more then 200 steps will bring you to the highest point in town where you will see a breathtaking view.

In San Gimignano you can also find

 Gelateria Dondoli

Piazza della Cisterna,4

this ice-cream shop won the Gelato World Championship 2006-07/ 2008/09.  Every flavor of ice-cream you can imagine is available…. and more!

For a delicious lunch or dinner in San Giminiano you can opt for:

Cum Quibus

Via San Martino 17

This cozy restaurant was awarded by Trip Advisor (#1 in Italy, #6 in Europe and #8 in the world).  In light of all of these awards, I strongly suggest you reserve a few days earlier. The food is sublime and the price is affordable to all.

So in this small town you will find the best ice-cream and one of the best restaurants in the world.. Did I convince you to go?
