La Foce’s origins
La Foce Gardens is in the area of the Val’Orcia (southern Tuscany). If in this area between April and October be sure to stop in and see the private gardens of La Foce, a private property dating to 1498 that was purchased in 1924 and, until the start of WWII, was gradually renovated by Antonio and Iris Origo.
In addition to rennovating the villa, the Origo’s created a glorious garden that, in late April and early May, for example, bursts with the violet tones of the Wisteria vine. La Foce garden was built on three different levels and, in addition to the colorful variety of plants that can be admired (each one blossoming at different moments through the warmer months and into the Fall), the views of the surrounding Tuscan landscape are stunning.
Iris Origo, who was of Anglo-American descent, in addition to caring for her home and garden, became a well-known writer. Indeed, she documented her family’s experiences during the war in a critically acclaimed book, “War in Val d’Orcia (1943-1944)”.
The La Foce gardens is only one of many stops to make while visiting Val d’Orcia – in the future I hope to share other secrets.
