Are you planning to visit the Amalfi Coast in winter? It can be a beautiful time of year… but you need to remember some things if you plan to visit Sorrento or Positano or any other gems along the costiera amalfitana.

What is the off-season along the Amalfi Coast? From the end of October through April (exempt Easter).

What to Expect in the Off-Season: Summer scenes are what most people associate with the Amalfi Coast. They think of relaxing by the pool and taking boat rides along its coast. The winter is not a good time to do these activities.

There are two major asterisks in that image of perfect coastal beaches. Contrary to popular belief, beaches are not the main asset of the area. The coastline is often rocky and steep, which means that beaches in towns are small and packed during summer. The high season on the Amalfi is characterized by large crowds and high prices. You can escape the crowds by traveling beyond the “big three” Amalfi Town and Sorrento. But if you travel along the coast on the SITA bus, expect to sweat (and squeeze). Our blog on How to get the best out of the Amalfi Coast has more information about the SITA bus.

Winter is a time when you don’t need to worry about any of these things. The weather is also more pleasant than you might expect, with temperatures ranging from 40 to 55 degrees F in Amalfi, January, and February. There is more rain than usual, November is the rainiest month, but there are still many sunny, crisp days.

However, there are some things that can be dangerous about winter on the Amalfi Coast. Tourists tend to visit the coast in the fall, spring, and summer. Some restaurants and hotels may be closed during this time. Regular ferry schedules operate from Easter weekend to October. Even if you find a boat that runs during winter, it can be canceled due to inclement weather. The SITA bus is still available year-round, so you can still town-hop along the coast. You can read the guide on Amalfi Coast transport to learn more about trains and plains, buses, and ferry services.

The Amalfi Coast can be a great place to visit in winter, despite the inconveniences.

Come to the Amalfi Coast in the Low Season: Bring layers and, especially in bad weather, sense humor. Make a list of the sights you want to see and the day trips you would like to take. This will help you to plan for weather conditions like rain or cold.
